Handmade diamond ring - Video

Interesting and educational video about handmade diamond ring making process. I was wondering how the diamonds are attached to the diamond rings and this video is giving the answer to my question. I just had to share with people who like to know more about the diamonds and diamond jewelery making process.

Cheap diamonds are comming

Industry have an answer to the high prices of the diamonds. A new and improved technology and diamond making machines will made growing diamonds cost-competitive and even much cheaper than the real mined natural diamonds. The giant machines have a graphite-carbon core and a diamond seed at a pressure of 850,000 PSI for four days, recreating conditions similar to those 100 miles below the earth's surface. This diamonds which are grown at the laboratories are optically, chemically and physically identical to those coming from the diamond fields and diamond mines.

CHINA - Second Largest Diamond Market

With a last year raise of the trading at Shanghai Diamond exchange of 16.4% and total of 1.5 billion dollars China took the second place from Japan as the second biggest diamond market in the world. With the high 8.7% growth of the economy, diamond jewelery demand continued to grow.
Until 2008, Japan was the second biggest market for diamonds and diamond jewelery, but China growing middle class is a huge potential market for diamonds and diamond jewelery. Although China diamond market is new (from mid 90's) the potential is great and all serious diamond traders are turning their eyes in this direction. The growing high and middle class in China is deeply influenced by the western style of living and their shopping and consumer habits are becoming similar to the consumer habits of their western counterparts.

Colored diamonds

Colorless diamonds are rare and expensive, but colored diamonds can be more rare and expensive, because colored diamonds are so uncommon and beautiful. They are so atypical that it is extremely hard to find two or more, same colored diamonds. So every colored diamond is unique. Colored diamonds can be found as pink diamonds, green diamonds, yellow diamonds and blue diamonds. Also colored diamonds can be found as a mix or combination of two or more colors.Opposite white diamonds, clarity is not so important so the rule 4C, which is important for the white (colorless) diamonds here is not so important. So for a colored diamonds the rule is more like 3C+C. Colored diamonds are graded by intensity of the color and the color itself. Also the carat weight is important and also the cut. The intensity of the color makes diamond more expensive. According to Gemological Institute of America (GIA) there are 9 (nine) different grades for the intensity of the colored diamonds.

Colored diamonds intensity grading

1.Faint
2.Very Light
3.Light
4.Fancy Light
5.Fancy
6.Fancy Dark
7.Fancy Intense
8.Fancy Deep
9.Fancy Vivid

For example, a Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond is more expensive than Fancy Intense Blue Diamond with a identical cut and carat weight.

Rubies

Rubies are considered as a precious stones, just like diamonds, emeralds and sapphires.
Rubies are pink or red gemstones or many variates between this two colors. The name ruby, comes from the Latin word for red. Rubies are red because there are presence of chromium. Rubies are variety of aluminum oxide or corundum. The price of rubies are mainly determined by color and then clarity, cut and carat size.
The most precious rubies are red or pigeon blood-red rubies. The biggest source of this first class premium pigeon's blood rubies is Burma, where most of the rubies are blood rubies. Burmese rubies and other game stones are banned by USA and EU, because the mining operations are in the hands of the brutal Burmese junta. Worker conditions in the Burmese rubies and game stones mines are shockingly bad. Child labor is common and also a diseases like AIDS.

Diamonds - They are strong and hard but still require care

It is best to live this job to professionals.
Take care for your diamonds by visiting the store where you buy the diamond jewelery or just go to the nearest diamond store.
The professionals will clean the diamond jewelery from any grease which can get on the diamond from your skin. The human skin have some natural oil and even the smallest touch can live some grease on the diamond jewelery. The ultrasonic cleaners are not a wise choice because can be bad for a diamond jewelery settings and even for the diamonds if there are some cracks. The professional jeweler will also check the settings and make any necessary repairs if needed.
The visits to the diamond professionals can be two or three times annually.
If diamonds get dirty and you just do not have a time to go to the diamond jewelery shop, mix some mild liquid detergent with water and clean the diamonds with a soft cloth. Some diamond jewelery shops are also providing a cleaning cloth for their clients. Avoid to wear diamonds if you just apply some body lotion or other body products.
Keep the diamonds separate because the diamond can be scratch only by other diamond. also the diamonds can scratch other jewelery. The worst case is to keep in the same jewelery box a diamonds jewelery and soft natural pearls.

Easy diamond deal

It seams there is nothing easier than doing a diamonds robberies.
A white male in his 20s, casually dressed, enter a Tiffany jewelery shop and after 45 minutes of talking and examining some diamond jewelery pieces, grabbed a 5.76 carat diamond platinum ring and stormed out of the jewelery shop. This happened on the December 28 and the police is still in the dark. The diamond platinum ring was worth $186.000.
The robber entered the jewelery store and he start to talk with a salesman about anniversary present for his brother. He asked the salesmen to show him some diamond watches, diamond rings and other diamond jewelery pieces. After 45 minutes of conversation and watching around the shop, he just grabed the most expensive piece of diamond jewelery and stormed out of the shop.

Really BIG DIAMONDS

Diamond big as icebergs, continents and Earth

Scientists come out with a most exciting hypotheses about the geological structure of the Solar System most strange planets like Neptune and Uranus. These remote planets which are gas giants can be covered with sea of melted diamond and with a chunks of hard diamonds big as icebergs.
Are the scientists just confirming the 40 year old prophecy of the Science Fiction writers like Arthur C. Clarke?
In one of his books he wrote that the core of Jupiter can be a solid diamond big as the whole planet Earth.
A new experiment made in the laboratory revealed some exciting data about this possible phenomena. Also this is one of the possible explanations about the Neptune’s magnetic field.
The experiment produce a liquid diamond using pressure and electricity similar to Neptune and Uranus pressures and electricity.

Diamond Thieves

Sitting on the balcony of the upscale fish restaurant, observing the crowd below and slowly drinking light coctalie, listening the slow music mixed with the sound of the sea wawes. This can sound like perfect vacation in some exotic far away from home land.
But not for the Pink Panthers - the most notorious diamond thief criminal groups. They "work" around the world and they are coming back on a vacation and safe hideaway in their homeland Montenegro.
Pink Panthers are the biggest and most notorious crime organization specialized for a diamonds. In the last 10 years the Interpol believe that they stole diamonds worth more than $350 millions in a 26 countries of the world. The jewelery owners from Paris, London, Rome, but also an upscale places like Monaco, Saint Trope and Dubai are shivering with fear just on the mentioning the name of the Pink Panthers . They are organization with more than 200 members. They are former members of the paramilitary groups which were fighting in the former Yugoslavia.
The diamond robberies was always different without any recognizable pattern. Sometimes they were sophisticated operations with a months of planning, learning and becoming familiar with a security systems, jewelery store guards, employees in the jewelery stores and sometimes just a quick 20 second jobs of storming in the jewelery shop, breaking the display glass near the front door taking the diamond jewelery and disappearing into the crowd of people.
The only shore piece of information about the Pink Panthers was that they are all citizens of the former Yugoslavia and most of them are from Montenegro and Serbia and few are from Croatia.

Diamond trends in 2010 - colorfull and sparkling

2010 is starting optimistic and diamonds trends and fashion will be all about color and abundance.
Today trends are showing that more than 80% of the diamond jewelery purchases are made by female clients. But although this percentage males are still the mail clients because they purchase more expensive items than female diamond jewelery consumers.
Today woman taste is colorful and bold. A multiple necklaces around the neck and a dozen of bracelets around the hand. The white and colored diamonds are mixed in all possible combination. White diamonds with blue diamonds for a official dinner, rose diamonds with yellow diamonds for a hot date and pink with green for any occasion where the style need to be in the first place.

In 2010 women is going to shop a jewelry with more small diamonds in the different colors and shapes. Round colorless brilliants will be encased in the same piece of jewelry right beside a blue yellow princess cut or yellow marquise. The diamonds will be accompanied with less expensive smaller colored gemstones. This trends will be a blessing for the diamond traders and jewelery shops which have a nose for the market and hear what customers are talking, but also a nightmare for the traditional diamond makers.
In 2010 diamonds are definitely in. Despite the high prices the demand is slowly rising with a healthy and natural trends. The rough diamonds jewelery will also be a choice for a more than a few clients. Pearls are back too, but the colored are in bigger demand than white.

Until 2020 demand for diamonds may double

Steady demand by the old markets, secured by long term contacts and the new emerging markets in China and India can result by doubling of the diamond industry by 2020.

The anonymous source close to the Angola diamond industry reveal the information about "Future diamonds demand in the world," discussed by the managing board of Endiama a state run company from Luanda, Angola.

The meeting took place on the celebration of the 29 anniversary of Endiama.

The Angolan diamond industry leaders were also discussing about the place of the Angola diamond indystry and position on the diamond market in the next 10 years.

iPhone, most expencive diamond phone in the world

So you have $3.15 millions but you really do not know what to do with this money? If that is the case you can spend this money on the absurd combination of cheap Made in China electronic covered in gold, platinum and diamonds.

That is exactly iPhone 3GS Supreme Rose, designed by Stuart Hughes. The iPhone casing is made from 18K rose gold with a platinum bezel. The bezel is adorned with 130 individual .75ct flawless diamonds.

The diference between Carat and Karat

Carat and Karat are similar words, both used in the jewelery industry. Often they are making confusion for the ordinary people because this two words have completely different meaning.

Carat is a measure for measuring the weight of the diamonds. One Carat is weight of 200 milligrams.

Karat is measure for the purity of the gold or platinum. Gold is very soft metal and for practical applications need to be mixed with other harder metals. Because the mixed gold need to be marked for the % of other alloys there are many measures developed but Karat is most popular. 24 karats (kt.) is standing for 100% pure gold. 18kt. means stand for 18 parts of gold and 6 parts of other metals or alloys mainly copper, silver, nickel and etc... 14 kt. is 14 parts gold and 10 parts other alloys. 10 kt. stands for 10 parts of gold and 14 parts of other alloys. Anything less than 10 kt. can not legally be sold as gold. Some producers (like Italians), instead of Karats are using measure by thousands. One thousand or 1000 means pure gold. Because it is very hard to extract 100% pure gold sometimes instead of 1000, 999 is used to mark 100% pure gold.

16 carats of diamonds embeded in Nokia cell phone

Even I do not like diamonds to be wasted on trivial items like cell phones, I must admit that Mr. Stuart Hughes did a good job with this model. The new Nokia Suprime is made with 83 grams of platinum and beautiful diamonds with total weight of 16 carats. 12.5 carats are pink diamonds and there is one 3.5 carat single cut flawless diamond in the centre. Some designers are comenting that pink doamonds are not the best choice for the platinum chasis.
The new diamond phone will be made only in three copies and will cost around 100.000 British pounds.

25.000 euro for a Diego Maradona diamond earring

Diego Maradona is not just one of the best soccer players of all times but also a person with a taste for diamonds. He is also a man who owes more than 30 million euros to the Italian government in taxes. On the 14 of January, 2010 his diamond earring was sold for 25,000 euros ($36,220) at an auction organized by Italian financial police to recover money owed to the country’s tax agency.

The earring was bought by anonymous woman which imidietly after the purchasing of the Maradona diamond earring rushed out of the auction house. The auction was held in the city of Bolcano situated in the northern part of Italy.

The finance police took the diamond earring from Diego Maradona at the weight loss clinic in Italy on the September 18, 2009. The seizure of the diamond earring was a result of the 36 millions of euros unpaid taxes by the Diego Maradona. This 36 million euros are tax for his playing in the soccer club Naples from 1984 to 1991. Diego Maradona claims that the soccer club was responsible for paying his taxes but after the close investigation of his contract with Naples, Italian government decide to ask the tax money from Maradona himself.

On the picture: Happy new owner of the Diego Maradona diamond earring.

Naomi Campbell - does she have a blood diamond?

War prosecutors from Hague, Netherlands on the trial of Charles Taylor are claiming that this war dictator and former president of Liberia, charmed Naomi Campbell with a blood diamond.
Charles Taylor is prosecuted for a murder, rape, amputation and using a child soldiers in his war operations against the neighboring Sierra Leone.
In the process the prosecutors are investigating his actions in trade of blood diamonds for weapons and military equipment.
Charles Taylor was buying arms from the South African arms manufactures and during one trip in South Africa he meet Naomi on the diner. The host of the dinner was South African president Nelson Mandela. Quincy Jones, Mia Farrow, Graca Machell (the wife of Nelson Mandela) and Naomi Campbell.
Naomi Campbell received the blood diamond right after the dinner and she informed Mia Farrow for this present.

On the picture - Naomi Campbell with a diamond jewelery.

What Are Blood Diamonds?

Blood diamonds are also known as a war diamonds, conflict diamonds or hot diamonds. This blood diamonds are usually mined in the war inflicted countries or in the countries with a civil war most of them in Africa. They are repeatedly used by the warlords, dictators or other forces which had a control over the area rich with diamond fields or diamond mines.
The money secured by the trade of the blood diamonds usually is used to finance the conflict, for buying a weapons and ammunition, for paying the solgiers and militias and for a coruption. Sometimes the control over the diamond fields is becoming a sole purpoce of the conflict or civil war. Some of the countries in which blood diamonds are used for the above mentioned purpoces are: Angola Liberia, Cote d'Ivorie, The Democratic Republic of Congo - Zaire, The Republic of Congo and Zimbabve.

In 2006 movie "Blood Diamond" there is a storry which exactly describe how diamonds are mined, traded and used for financing the wars in Africa. Altough the names of the war fractions and places are invented there are striking similarity with a real wars, military fractions and powerty of the workers which are enslaved to work on the blood diamonds mining fields.

Shopping for a Diamonds

Where to start?

Place.

If you are out on the market for a diamonds and you really like to have some good deal I will recommend to start with a place of buying. This is very important because the established brand name jewelery shops can go with crazy 200% overhead. So if you like to buy your next diamond jewelery in the most expensive city neighborhood and pay for the reception area, expensive carpets and nice receptionist be my guest. This can be a beautiful experience (and you can have it without buying;-)) if you can afford it and you are ready to spend a couple of thousand dollars more for the same product you can find on internet.
How to buy diamonds on Internet? Is it safe?

Quality of the Diamond

Diamonds quality is set bu the 4C rule.
Carat weight, Cut, Clarity and Color. If you like to brag around your neighborhood with the size of your diamond, you need to go with a carat weight as your main concern and not to worry about the other three properties of the diamond. This is very important for the wedding or engagement rings. The bigger the stone (or stones) the more happy your mother in law will be. Probably she is not a diamond expert and like 99.999% of the people in the world she can not tell the difference between colorless and near colorless diamond or know the difference between perfect cut and shallow cut.
If you like to invest in diamonds I recommend to buy smaller diamonds with smaller carat weight and take care for the color, clarity and cut.

One piece or more

One diamond of the let say 1 carat is much, much more expensive than 4 diamonds each with a weight of 0.25 carats. So you might like to consider a 3 of 4 smaller diamonds in your ring than one solitary with a same quality and carat weight.

Type of setting

Most popular settings are settings made of platinum, yellow and white gold. Gold can be cheaper than platinum more than 60% so you can have more money to spend on the diamonds if you choose gold instead of platinum.

Shape of the diamonds

Shallow diamonds are bigger in diameter than diamonds with a normal cut. Also pear, marquises and oval diamonds appear bigger than diamonds with other designs.

I hope my thinking was helpful and you will be happy with your diamond shopping.

How Do You Know Fake or Real Diamond?

Every time when we see a diamond ring, diamond necklace, diamond earrings
or some other diamond jewelery, our first question is:

Is it real?

Of course is it quite normal people to ask this question because diamonds are rare, expensive and not everybody can afford to have diamonds.
From the other side when there is some expensive goods on the market, there are an attempts to make a cheaper imitations or fake goods. In the history of the human kind there are numerous attempts and efforts for making fake diamonds or presenting some other crystals as diamonds.
One of the crystals which are very often misused as a fake diamonds are Cubic Zirconium.

Cubic zirconia (or CZ) is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide. This is a sunthetic material (there is also a natural counterpart) which means that it is man made and can be produced in the huge quantities. The price of the cubic zirconia is very low and it is used widely by producers of cheap jewlery, but also in many other industries like optic, timepieces, etc...

The expert can tell the difference between the cubic zirconia and the diamonds by many diferences but easiest way is Index of Fraction, the weight, and hardness.

Diamonds have the highest Index od Fraction and cubic zirconium have higher dispersion of light so the trained eue can easy tell which of the crustals presented is diamond and which one is CZ. The second way to tell the difference is weight. Cubic zirconium is 1,7 times than weight of the real diamond of the same size. The hardness of both is also very different and diamonds are much harder than CZ but the first two ways are suficient for the experts to tell the difference.

Is it safe to buy a Diamonds on the Internet

For everybody who is out on the market for buying diamonds a simple question arise.

Is it safe to buy a diamonds on internet?

The simple answer on this simple question is DEFINITELY!

In the first days of the Internet there were many flaws in the web sites security, shopping, internet transactions and so on. But today the big online jewelry stores have the best technology to protect their clients from all online threats.

You can choose to buy your next diamond in the trusted neighborhood jewelry store where the sales person can have some conversation and few tips for you, but the big online diamond stores are cheaper so you are getting bigger bang for your buck. Also there are much more choices than in the stores near you.

These days there are a lot of reputable and trusted online jewelry stores on internet. My advice for you is when you buy your diamonds on internet you need to take care and select a reputable jeweler, choose a diamond with a GIA report, read carefully the return policy and make shore it works for you and find an independent appraiser who will verify that the diamond you just bought matches the certificate. Sometimes the appraisers are closely tied with diamond traders and there are cases where they will offer you to buy the diamond or diamond jewelry for you so they can get a commission for them. This is not necessary a bad thing if the appraisers are fair with you, but there are a lot of cases where appraisers have a conflicts of interest.

Investing in Diamonds

Diamonds are some of the most beautiful and extremely rare substance available in the world today and there is no recession on the business with diamonds. Diamonds today use is growing in an unexpecting ways so they can be found on the places where nobody expect or even thing just a decade ago.
For example, the diamonds even find their place on the somehow very new technology like cell phones. There are dozens of cell phones from different producers which are fashioned with diamonds and other valuable and precious stones.
Some of the most valuable gemstones are colored diamonds. They price is determined by the 4C rule, but color of the diamond also have a role. Even the trades with a diamonds have strict rules; the auctions where high valued diamonds are selling can be very unexpected and exciting events.
The price for the exceptionally fine gemstones like colored diamonds is almost impossible to predict. The true value is determined by the wish and cash of the potential buyer. These moments are making diamond business and diamond investments not only a business but exciting lifestyle for everybody which can afford to play this game.
Investors in diamonds are no short time players because diamonds are long term business (that is the try meaning of the song: Diamonds are forever:-)).
Just for example, 20 years ago a first class pink diamond could be bought for $70.000 per carat. Today the same diamond can be sold for over $0.5 million per carat.
The highest price paid for a diamond per carat was in 2008, at the Christies Auction House. The 3.73 carat Fancy Vivid Blue (on the picture) was sold for a $4.95 million, which is $1.3 million per carat!

Most common diamond designs.

Most common diamond designs are round diamonds, square or princess cut diamonds which are second most common diamond designs (24% of the people are choosing this design). Third most common design is the pear design. The pear diamond design is very modern this days and the number of people choosing this design is growing.

Today, most of the diamond jewelry shops are offering only diamond jewelry with a preset diamonds but there are plenty of shops which are offering a lose diamonds which can be bought separately from the rings, earrings or other pieces of jewelry. Also there are rings without diamonds so the clients can design their dream diamond jewelry by simply buying a diamond and the jewelry separated. This way you can your own one of a kind piece. It is a smart way to contact a Diamond jewelry shop and make an appointment so they can devote a jewelry designer who will help you to design your piece.

Great Diamond video by GIA Diamond Grading Guide: How to Buy a Diamond

GIA Diamond Grading Guide: How to Buy a Diamond
Great educational and informational video from Gemological Institute of America. In a simple and understanding way explains all about 4C (Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight). I enjoyed this great video about diamonds and I warmly recommend to all who are purchasing diamonds in the near future.

What I need to know before buying diamonds or diamond jewelry

The rule of the 4C’s.

There are four variables for everybody who likes to buy diamonds or diamonds jewelry and watches: Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut. COST is determined by these four variables.

Be careful where you are buying your diamonds. Diamonds can be a simple present for the dearest ones in your family, but also can be a sound and long term investment. When you buy diamonds to ask for a certified diamonds is a MUST. Uncertified diamonds can not be that worthy or the quality can be lower. The name and reputation of the laboratory which is certifying the diamonds is also important. The most famous and most reputable certification laboratory for the diamonds is GIA. GIA stand for Gemological Institute of America. GIA is running the business in terms of providing a methodology how to compare and to classify diamonds but also suppliers, dealers and jewelers. So GIA is not only a laboratory but also is the world biggest authority for diamonds and other precious gems. Appraisal by G.G. is different than GIA GTL which is just a report by the graduate of the GIA School.

The other thing you need to know is a Rap Sheet, which is Standard report of Diamond prices. This is a price list of the wholesale diamonds on the market. Of course there are market fluctuations so the Rap Sheet is not that important if you shop single diamond or a piece of diamond jewelry. The best way to shop for a decent diamond is to buy a certified diamond. Do not shop for brand names. Just check the 4C and buy the certified diamond with a highest 4C.
